Wed 4th July - Comp Ent

Day 3’s task was ‘Around The Compass’. Two lines running North-South and East-West through Aston Down separated the country into 4 quadrants. The task was to fly to any BGA turnpoint more than 10km away from Aston Down in any quadrant. There were bonus points for the number of quadrants and turnpoints used. There seemed to be 2 plans used by almost every pilot in the comp, either try and pick up as many quadrants as possible or fly one long leg picking up more distance points and being able to find the ‘better’ weather.

The grid launched around 13:00 after the sniffer reported an astonishing 2 knots up to 1500ft! The sky looked awful and sure enough the tow up was very smooth, showing the lack of movement in the air.

At first it was a struggle with most of the gliders well below release height. However, there was a weird convergence which, when used correctly, gave staggering 3-5kt climbs up to over 4000ft.

DG1, DD3 and JDD managed to pick up turnpoints in all 4 quadrants. The mighty Eagle landed out at Nympsfield (I believe) before being later seen back in the air after a relight. Ron in 711 opted for a long leg but struggled as the day was really not suited for big span glider, but still managed an impressive 150km.

Elsewhere in the comp, there continued to be impressive flying with 5 people managing over 200km flights on a day which looked like it would provide circuit practice.
