Sun 1st July

As glider pilots it is always “interesting” when others talk about how nice it would be to have some rain - “the gardens could do with it” is often said during a period of hot weather as we have all been enjoying recently. However as glider pilots it would be preferable for such rain to arrive overnight or on a non flying day even if the airfield could also do with some rain at the moment. The weather forecast for today was reasonable enough to encourage a keen group of members to the extent that the Clubhouse was rather full before 9:00am, with the flying list similarly full.

With suitable optimism that the predicted weather would be good enough to allow some gliding to take place the vehicles had already been brought out and the winch set up in the North East corner of the airfield. But with darkening skies and the rain radar indicating lightning strikes in the Channel not that far away it was considered prudent to not bring any gliders out of the hangar. And as the morning progressed the skies continued to darken until the rain arrived, and plenty of it...
And I think we noticed this blocked downpipe last time it rained....!
With more rain forecast the winch and vehicles were put away and people planned what they would be doing for the rest of the day, watering the garden having probably moved a tad down the ‘to do list’.
Daniel Hender in the simulator (Mike Sloggett)
During the morning Daniel Hender and Emma Kendall made good use of the simulator to try their skills in learning how to aerotow.

And of course as we all left the airfield early afternoon driving through much water on the roads the sun and blue skies appeared - still  the gardens could do with the rain I guess. - Mike Sloggett
