Thurs 5th July

Bright sunny start in a fickle Northerly wind - first decision of the day where to launch from, take the easy one from nearest the hangar. After about 10 launches the tailwind became more consistent and the gliders were hopped down the other end. Launches improved from 700-800ft to 1100ft, but it was still very difficult to locate any lift from the winch launch.

It was decided to stop for lunch to give the sky a chance to get going, and in fact Andrew Logan in ASW15 managed to get away before lunch.
Nice puffy clouds  (Mark Courtney)
Into the afternoon, soaring conditions got really good and the lift became accessible from the winch launches. The nice puffy clouds to the north gave some high cloud bases. There were also big black clouds to the south in the sea breeze convergence which were working individually but not linking up into a 'classic'. (photos Mark Layton)

Congratulations to Geoff Lawrence  for achieving his Silver Height in Pegase HES and to Chris Mew who achieved his 2 hour flight for cross-contry endorsement in DG100 LRN.

Paul Summers and Mark Layton both enjoyed their first outings in 477 resplendent in new colour scheme after refinishing.

Pete Harmer and Ian Hunt decided to try a little cross-country in DG505 and turned Chard, back along the convergence to near Cullompton and then Tiverton.

Thanks to Gordon Bonny, Chris Mew and George Sanderson for volunteering to collect Paul Little  and CEC from his unplanned landing at South Petherton.

Meanwhile the July course members enjoyed their 3rd day with the better soaring conditions. Congratulations to Dave Herbert and Lukasz Kieruczenko for completing their Bronze flying tests, and both solo aerotow for Yellow card.
