After a drive up from Devon on Saturday in the pouring rain, Pete Startup, Tom Sides, John Pursey and Nick Jones arrived at Denbigh to be greeted by...virtually no one. JB did arrive around 2:00 am, but most of the expedition participants had either cancelled or delayed coming until the forecasted conditions improved.
Good conditions in North Wales (Pete Startup) |
Come Sunday, weather conditions were slack wind and bright blue skies with a hint of a few cumulus clouds as the sun tried to dry out the rain from the previous day. All was aerotow with a hired tuggie from Bicester in his Icarus in to help. However, what a change as the day went on. JB and Pete found more than sufficient thermals to take them down to Shrewsbury and back for 200km-ish. Tom in DG1 and Nick/JP in the Eagle soared for three hours some 25km down the ridge, and along with some pilots from Camphill and Bicester, had a great time playing as the sky kicked up increasingly strong lift till 4:30.
Pete's cheesy grin in 230 (Pete Startup) |
Even Pete had a super cheesy grin at the end of the day as we all agreed this was one of the best flying days of the year. Epicness!!! - TS
