Was it something I said, the somewhat lacklustre forecast or just the Bank Holiday weekend....I suspect a combination of these and the fact that the previous day had been "booming" but the club was a bit like the Marie Celeste even by 9.00am.
Duty Instructor Simon Leeson and Duty Launch Marshall Nigel Everett were discussing the whys and wherefores of the lack of people with James and Sam Flory, when a new member Simon Rickard turned up together with Tom Sides and Mike Fairclough. Although all the ground equipment was out and ready to go it was going to be hard to find enough of us to operate it. It was decided to get one K21 and the Tug out in the hope that a few more people would turn up by the time we were ready to fly.
With the K21 and Tug lined up ready to go, the duty tuggie, Simon Jordy turned up together with Guy Adams so we were never going to be short of people to fly the tug! Simon Leeson flew the Prawnee on the first tow to about 1500' with James Flory and Simon Rickard in the K21 before handing over to Simon Jordy. By the time James had had another flight and Simon Leeson had flown with Sam Flory the conditions were deteriorating with a few drops of rain starting to appear. The K21's tailplane then needed the attention of Ian Mitchell to check a bit of play so he kindly interrupted his extraction of the IS28M2 to take a look.
By the time this was all sorted we had enough time to clean the K21 and get everything back in the hangar before it started to rain. Everyone else was interested in Ian Mitchell's acquisition of the IS which by now was looking a little less sorry for itself after a good clean.
Well, at least we flew! - Simon Leeson
